Baptism is an outward expression of something that is happening inwardly — a change in your heart. When you are baptized, you are declaring to everyone that you are making a decision to follow Jesus. It symbolizes your old self dying as you go under the water and your new self rising as you come up. (Acts 16:31-34)

Baptism is one of two ordinances that Jesus gave to the church before he ascended to heaven (Matthew 28:19–20). By being baptized you are obediently following Jesus’ example and command for our lives. This, in turn, shows that we love Jesus and want to live our lives for Him.

Baptism is the next step in the journey for every person who has decided to follow Jesus. If you have made that decision, you are ready! (Acts 8:12)

We are saved by believing Jesus is God’s son, whom He sent to be the sacrifice for our sins, and putting our faith in Him alone. Being baptized doesn’t mean you will go to heaven; it’s a symbol and celebration of salvation. However, in the Bible, baptism always follows salvation and is an important next step in following Jesus.

In the Bible, we see people being baptized by immersion (that’s a Biblical word for dunking). The word baptism, in the Bible, is used to describe a sunken ship, fully submerged. Jesus was baptized by being submerged in the water and coming up out of it. The Bridge follows this example. (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10)

If you haven’t been baptized by immersion since you made the decision to follow Jesus, we want to help you in this next step in your journey of faith. Once you have taken that step, whether at The Bridge or through another Christian church, there is no need to be baptized again.

As mentioned earlier, being baptized by submersion is symbolic of our death to sin and our old life. Coming up out of the water is symbolic of the new life we now have because of our faith in Jesus. It’s a picture of how Jesus raised us and gave us a fresh start in life.
